Company Information
In 1929, with a $500 loan from his father, Jack Williams Sr. opened the first Jack Williams Tire location in Kingston, Pennsylvania. Mr. Williams’ first location consisted of one service bay, two gas islands, and a small retread shop. As the business grew, Jack Williams Tire moved to several larger buildings before settling into the location on Wyoming Avenue in Kingston in 1954.
Bill Williams, son of Jack Williams, and the Company’s CEO began working for his father’s business in 1962. Bill pumped gas, sold tires, and helped with the bookkeeping. At that time, he was one of five employees.
By the late 1960’s, the Williams family realized that additional room for warehousing was needed. A new warehouse was constructed in Luzerne in 1968. In addition to providing additional warehouse space, retreading and office space were also moved to the 35,000 square foot facility in Luzerne.
In 1972, a second retail location was opened in Berwick. In the same year, construction was started for a third location on Route 315 in Plains, but was halted by Hurricane Agnes. The Wilkes-Barre store was out of harm’s way; but, the Kingston store was totally submerged underwater and sustained severe damage.
The largest wave of expansion came in the mid 1980’s with the building of the Stroudsburg store and the purchase of the Shamokin store. With these stores on board, the Luzerne warehouse became inadequate and a 90,000 square-foot warehouse was purchased in 1988, in Moosic, Pennsylvania. The warehouse became, and still is, headquarters for the corporate offices, warehousing, and wholesale divisions. With room to
grow, the retail stores count grew to include nine new locations.
Jack Williams Tire continues to experience steady growth. In 2007, Jack Williams Tire acquired Lehigh Tire Company. This acquisition increased the number of retail stores in the Lehigh Valley to seven. In the summer of 2008, a new wholesale center was opened in the Harrisburg market, and the addition of a new state-of-the-art warehouse facility was completed in the fall of that year. Most recently, in 2012, Jack Williams Tire added additional wholesale centers in Newburgh, New York and King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. In 2013, Jack Williams Tire also opened up a wholesale center in Bridgewater, New Jersey.
Jack Williams Tire is a third-generation family owned and operated business. Scott, Tracey, and Jason Williams have worked with their Father to grow the Company to include 29 retail stores, and 11 Warehouse Centers, that employ over 600 people.
Jack Williams Tire is the 47th largest independent tire dealer in the U.S., and was voted Tire Dealer of the Year in 2006. It is one of the largest tire wholesalers, and actively serves over 5,500 accounts. In 2014, Jack Williams Tire marked its 85th Anniversary, and the Company looks forward to the future with continued growth.
