Description

Function of the Job:

Employees in this classification are required to perform all repairs and maintenance of Township equipment and vehicles. Must have experience in diesel and gasoline engines, electrical, hydraulic, air conditioning, fabricating and welding. To perform duties assigned by Superintendent, Foreman, or Lead Mechanic using all Personal Protective Equipment properly when necessary.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have the ability to work independently and diagnose problems and repair various types of Mechanical Engines, vehicles and equipment: work well with tools and equipment common to the trade; perform related work as required.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and contributes to a positive work environment.
  • Performs prescribed activities efficiently with limited supervision
  • Reacts productively to interruptions and changing conditions.
  • Completes paperwork accurately. Verifies and correctly enters data.
  • Maintains an acceptable attendance record and is punctual.
  • Effectively uses verbal, nonverbal, writing, and listening skills.

Examples of Work:

  • Perform mechanical repair/maintenance in the work area and in the field on automobiles, trucks, tractors, lawnmowers, compressors, mowing machines, snow plows, graders, loaders, rollers, vibrators, including engines (regardless of fuel type), ignition and starting systems, braking systems, steering and suspension systems, drive trains and various associated assemblies.
  • Must supply own tools as a pre-requisite.
  • Must be able to weld and fabricate truck and equipment apparatus without supervision.
  • Diagnose and repair Emergency Vehicles.
  • Diagnose/repair Air Conditioning Systems.
  • Assist with other maintenance and laboring duties.
  • Keep records, check and assist in maintaining equipment.
  • Must maintain a clean and orderly working area with regard to facility systems and equipment.
  • Responsible for continuing education and self motivated improvement/development.
  • Ensure proper safety procedures/precautions are followed and reasonable standards of workmanship and output are maintained to achieve desired objectives.
  • Respond to and work along with the Public Works employees in the clearing and removal of snow and/or emergency conditions or situations.
  • May be required to be on twenty-four (24) hour call as needed.
  • Perform all work as requested in a timely manner.
  • Makes road calls when vehicles become disabled.
  • Accepts personal responsibility for decisions and conduct.
  • Prepares and submits work reports on time.
  • Helps with deliveries including unloading trucks and inspecting packages for damage.

18. Represents the Township in a professional manner to deliver the most positive public image – how residents, vendors, coworkers, etc. perceive you is a reflection on the Township.

19. Ensures that (PPE) Personal Protective Equipment is used properly.

20. Willing to attend training classes to gain and share knowledge about advances in equipment and technology.

Working Conditions:

  • Duties may require balancing, bending, climbing, crouching, kneeling, reaching, standing, working at various heights.
  • Duties may require lifting, carrying, and moving work related supplies and equipment.
  • Duties may require wearing protective clothing and using safety equipment.
  • Duties may require working under time constraints to meet deadlines.
  • Duties will require working in, on, and around trash trucks which may or may not be empty (smells, maggots, and the like).

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

5 years heavy equipment and truck repair experience

Must supply own tools as a prerequisite

Valid New Jersey CDL Class “B” with air brake endorsement license

High School Diploma or equivalent
